The Great God Pan

  • by John Kruse

The ‘cult of Pan’ that emerged into British literature and art in the later nineteenth century was by no means isolated or unique. It originated (plainly) from the ancient cult of the Mediterranean in the classical period, but the memories of Pan did not leap suddenly across centuries to fill the imaginations of Victorian era writers and painters. Rather, there was a continual thread of learning about, and celebration of, the god that connected Imperial Rome to the British Empire and the 21st century.
